1. Ed, flashing characters

Hi

Windows XP, EU 4.00, latest build

Don't usually use ed, but I've just had occasion to do so. In a window, the grey background is replaced by white, rendering a lot of code invisible.

Full screen, the entire character set flashes, but the background remains grey.

Suspect may be code page / character set anomaly here.

In either case ed is effectively unusable.

In my opinion ed has been dead in the water for several years. I think it was around the 2.5 release of Euphoria when Rob Craig substituted ascii codes for ncurses. Prior to that point I was amazed at how easy it was do extend ed's features. Almost instantly it went from becoming a joy to work and play around with to a royal pain to do anything with. I admit my programming skills are very limited - but that only goes to show how easy and flexible ed was prior to 2.5.

The last time I tried ed it wasn't really functional on Linux for some reason. I think that each different console requires a different fix for one or more functions.

I'd be curious to know if anyone is currently using ed under linux.

I'd love to see ed "fixed", if possible. A simple console editor can be quite useful.

If ed is not going to be maintained, it needs to be dropped.

Using? No, there are dozens of much better & easier to use editors free with Linux. Ed DOES work ok, but all things considered, it is probably a net loss to include it with Euphoria, because it makes Euphoria appear to be caught in a time warp.

I could be wrong, but I strongly suspect that there have always been dozens of better and easier to use free editors with Linux and even Windows/DOS for that matter. Rob has said that ed was intended as a simple demo. I think ed has/had many merits as a euphoria sandbox for programming toddlers, such as yours truly, to play around in.

I'm not interested in beating a dead horse though. GUI editors are au currant, console editors are passe'.

BTW I deeply appreciate your euphoria support files for KATE/Kwrite.

So who decides whether ed is maintained in the official release or not?

Basically the community does. If it 'costs' too much to maintain it will fall behind though.

Ah, so looks like ed's on its last legs then.

Just asked because I was a putting together a very basic tutorial for eu beginners ( http://openeuphoria.org/wiki/euwiki.cgi?AbsoluteBeginners ), and ed is the standard, ready installed console editor. But if its going to be dropped, I'll have to start with 'Fire up your favourite text editor'.

Anyone feel free to edit and chip in, I'm not holding any exclusivity rights.

Dropped or not, I think the "fire up your favorite text editor" is best. Might suggest a couple for each platform. I've used Euphoria since at least '98, and I have only a few times used the editor. It just seems awkward to me. I've not found it useful, and I can't say that I have ever examined the ed source code to learn how something should be done. I don't think a beginner would be able to do that either.

Sure.

Add your favourite editor link to the absolute beginners page.

9. Re: Ed, flashing characters

Strangely, I can't (yet). Maybe changes made into wiki and forum engines and/or database forced me to recreate both forum and wiki accounts. But I'll put my favorites there, including syntax highlighters and other goodies.
