1. Relaunching an application

I seem to remember this being answered years ago, but can't find my bookmark. Is there a way, without the use of a helper application, for an app to shut itself down and then relaunch itself? Seem to recall a way to post a message for the next command to execute as an app closes. Anybody with a memory better than mine? Many thanks!
