Hi,
when I run the following ,
include dll.e free_console()
I end up with a console window that says
[Interactive EX.EXE]
Shouldn't just close?

Not with ex.exe (the DOS32 Interpreter). Only with exw.exe and exwc.exe (the WIN32 Interpreters).
