1. Proposal for Micro$oft Haters

Hello.

I want to make an alternative OS that is like Windows. I have moderate
experience in Euphoria, so I'll write it in that. I do need help
however, for there are more knowledgable Euphoria programmers than me.

I think I'm going to name it EuOS or AlternaOS.

i'm no Micro$oft hater, but it would be nice to try out an alternative to
DOS. BTW, stick to the name EuOS. I like it.

hmmm, be kinda tough making a rival OS, but anything that isn't DOS is
better. BTW, what you're making is a SHELL, not an OS. Shell's depend on
something else to run, like win 3.x. OS's run by themselves, like mac OS,
OS/2, and Linux. Since Euphoria is DOS based, and you're making a EuOS,
it's really a shell that's dependant on DOS(and Euphoria).

4. Re: Proposal for Micro$oft Haters

and another thing. OS's and shells can run their own types of programs,
so you'll have to create your own type of scripting(programming language)
to make programs with, and some programs created with the script. And
pull down boxes, and text boxes, scroll bars, buttons, check boxes, radio
buttons, tabs, clickable pictures, pull-down menus, icons, OS deluxe. You
could also throw in some mouse capability. But I never got that to work.
I was about to send a message that would have attracted flame mail or
something about that mouse thing! GUI is a nice thing. Or will you choose
Euphoria as your scripting instead of making your own? I had a little
trouble creating IF THEN ENDIF blocks in my own scripting language.

and add OS/2 mac OS and LINUX program support too! Windows supports DOS.
And create your own prompt, that's cooler than DOS and ultimately
customizable!

ambitious, perhaps.

I'm assuming that you won't be using exw.exe
since that requires the OS you'll be substituting.

This means that you'll be using ex.exe.

Well, do you plan on implementing multi-tasking?
multi-threading? If so, I don't believe you'll
be able to do that with ex.exe since system()
can only spawn one process and return.

What about driver support? Printers, scanners,
modems, fax, mice, trackballs, touchpads,
drawing tablets, sound cards, CDROMs, tape
drives, 'zip' drives (and their kind), video
cards, 3d boards, tv tuner boards, tv capture
boards, video out boards, mpeg2 decoders, DVD,
radio tuner boards, monitors, keyboards,
floppies, IDE/SCSI HD's, USB devices, ISA,
EISA, VESA, PCI, AGP, network cards, power managment,
joysticks, gamepads, flight yokes, steering wheels,
and "alternate access devices" for the disabled?

Whose gonna write those drivers?

Will it support DirectX, Direct3D, openGL,
multi-monitor displays, 3dfxGlide, API's,
DLL's, ActiveX, Java runtime, SQL, JET,
TCI/IP, IPX, SPX, NetBIOS, Novell, and
multi-national configuration and font support?

Will all the software that I currently have
run in this OS, or will I have to buy all
new software?

yeah, ambitious, perhaps...

This could be difficult as Euphoria *needs* DOS to run.

Anybody's welcome to mosey on down to my euphoria programs directory (Link
2, Euphoria page) and download the contents of the "euphos" directory. I
gave up developing it a while ago because it seemed to lack direction.
euphos.000 is fairly stable (if limited) and the current version (002 I
think) is a little less stable but has a few more functions.
If you decide to continue developing it, *please* gimme some credit :)
And if more then one of you wants to work on it, make it a group project.
No dialects please.

I even managed to create a DOS boot disk that ran it as a pseudo-shell.
(in the CONFIG.SYS: SHELL=A:\COMMAND.COM A:\ /P /K EUPHOS.EXE)

8. Re: Proposal for Micro$oft Haters

Hey, Hawke! Don't you think all that driver support is premature? I
think he should start writing it for Macs first, cuz they were designed
for GUI's in the first place, then work up to PC's.

You know, I have a friend who _really_ does write his own OS's. And
he's totally willing to help anyone else -- assuming you come with an
appropriate amount of self-modifying AI experience, and a strong
background in hex programming (assembly is too dependent on other idiots
for him).

9. Re: Proposal for Micro$oft Haters

I think I'll start out with EuOS simple first. A file manager and text
editor and icons for them, and then build from there.

An alternative Windows-type "shell" for DOS might be a good idea.

First I'll make it in Eu and see how it goes. I do have Borland C++ ya
know...

To Hawke:

That would be obsurd to start out with all that smile And besides, who needs
DirectX? DOS is more powerful than Win95 anyhew.

To Carl:

Thanks for the tip (the floppy booting one).

I'll probably see what happens I guess. Does anyone here know how to make
disk images? smile

There is this OS called FreeDOS, and it's compatible with MS-DOS, but it's
FREE!
I think I'll try to make it to take advantage of FreeDOS features, but keep
in tune with MS-DOS. That'll bring down the price...

Win98 is like $120+ dollars. What I want is the price to be like $20.00 or
cheaper.
If Micro$oft gets scared (never know, if it's a big success), they'll
probably offer me like $200 million for rights to the software anyways smile

Anyone can help with this. We can basically toss some code around, glue 'em
together, and make a buck smile

If anyone else DOES help, maybe we should have a company like THE EUPHORIA
GROUP or something equally Fortune 500ic smile

Besides, we'd have 200+ great minded programmers who don't rely on C/C++
for much (except me, I use them all the time smile.

LONG LIVE EUPHORIA!

ummmm... look up ^^^^
now, look down vvvv

isn't this what your proposing in paragraph 1 in
the first place??? :>

>First I'll make it in Eu and see how it goes.
>I do have Borland C++ ya know...
kewl! me too! all those reference books it comes with
made great kindling for my fireplace last year
(when i found EU, thereabouts)
and the 20sumfin floppies it came with i took
apart, snagged the magnetic media out of them,
ground it into finefinefine particles, mixed
it with some paint, sprayed the paint on my car
cuz it needed a paint job, and now my car absorbs
electrical energy and is in effect, stealthy to
radar traps! (yeah, that's the ticket!)

>To Hawke:
>That would be obsurd to start out with all that smile
tis why i mentioned it, after all, Gates did and
look what happened...

>And besides, who needs DirectX?
actually, i rather like DX6... i wouldn't program
with it if you paid me, i'd run for GLIDE or openGL...

>Does anyone here know how to make disk images? smile
hrm.... on a more serious note now, are you referring
to like a linux based VMLINUZ / Zimage type affair???
perhaps, if you told us what you were thinking of doing
with the images, mebbe we could fig'ur a way ta cheat :)

I'll help in building modules for it! (You know, Nate... let's make it
more like X-windows!) ... just a problem... what's gonna be the C.L.I?
(Command Line Interface aka command.com) Micro$oft DOS/Windows Core...
or Linux Core? (dat be kewl, nop?)

Announcement to all: Due to a undue termination of internet access, and
restrictions to the computer, I was unable to come back quickly, so I am
back, for... quite a while, or so I hope... ;)

More importantly, (since you wanted to help), go to the EuOS site. It has
some info and you can join there.

Actually i've moved the site to http://euos.hypermart.net/
The one at http://members.tripod.com/Ajmitchell/EuOS/ points to this,
but it's better to have the actual link blink
