OpenEuphoria.org Ticket #29: Recent Activity: allow selection of area to view

could the new Recent Actity page allow user to specify/select what area they might wish to look at?

That might make it less cluttered (although having all as an option or even default seems just fine).

That would also have the advantage that if one selected the area of FORUM under Recent Activity, that would be (or be like?) the simply chronological presentation of posts some would like to see.

I am going to start on the "Message" list for the forum right now. One thing I was hoping with the "Recent" tab is to let people see all the activity that is going on and hopefully get people commenting in tickets, news articles, etc...

Would this filter be necessary if the "Message" view existed?

Well, not necessarily necessary, but still useful, I think, particularly if also applied to TICKETS, for a similar reason as above: allow seeing all, or optionally remove "clutter", such that if a person were interested in working on website problems, only seeing those tickets, etc.

I agree the default should always be show all.

A general filter would indeed be useful. I think it would be useful if it were sticky at the top level. Further filtering (such as to topic) could be transient.

Now that the subject list is implemented, it's far easier to read the forum (if you like the message view) by changing your profile setting to "Message List" instead of using the recent tab. So, why would you want to filter and show only recent forum messages? The forum index now will present the exact same view as the recent tab (with the forum only filter on).

If the only thing we could filter on at the top level would be "forum" I would agree with you. Certainly a forum view would be redundant with the message view now available (with minor differences in the selection screen). However, we have more than just "forum" that can be used as a top level filter, right? Ticket and ticket comment show up on the first few pages. I would think that wiki changes (however they are labeled) would be in the list of things to be filtered. There will no doubt be more things, later.

In other words, don't think of it as a filter FOR the forum, think of it as a filter for everything else.

I wanted to be able to display only recent Wiki changes with the new euwiki so I modified our "Recent" action to support URL parameters (0=off, 1=on):

  • wiki
  • forum
  • news
  • ticket

so, 3/4 of the work is done for this ticket. Just need a UI now to allow the selection of those parameters.

On/Off style filter added.
