do we really need to nest quotes indefinably?

This is really confusing and pointless-
CoJaBo said...
most if not all forums strip all but the topmost level of quoted text, like I have to do manually every time.

Nested tags are hellishly complicated to deal with.
Oh, also the Preview Content button does not work.

For those users who know how to use Creole well, and who know how to deal with many levels of quotes, (and also how to cut out irrevelant text and re-arrange the relevant stuff to make it easier to follow), I think nesting should be left in as an option. Just not the default option. It's nice to be able to quote more that just the person immediately above you when responding to a point.

Changed from Creole to OpenEuphoria.org (it is not located in Creole code but in euweb code).

I'm not confused, nor do I see it as pointless or complex.
The idea of an option mode is a good compromise. It should be one of the 'personal' options in a user's profile.
And BTW, the Preview Comment button does work. Why do you think it doesn't?

I suppose that this would be fine as a customizable setting per user. I could see the point of having some sort of UI to select what to quote, and doing the right thing, but I prefer to be able to define whatever level of context I want.
But the non-quoting in the ticket preview is a real bug.

This is a comment that I'm previewing but won't update. (At least not deliberately.)

Looks like its only an issue for me because my browser doesn't support javascript.

The preview works, generally, but the quote tags aren't converted into divs, etc. I'm not sure where all of that happens, but from looking at the ticket templates vs the forum templates, the previews seem to be generated differently. IIRC, the quote tag is handled by the forum software, not creole.

Creole does [quote] processing.

Many times quoting more than one is necessary to keep the context. The forum supports both threaded views and individual message views. Only quoting the last message would be a mistake.
I think it should be up to the user to quote what is necessary and remove what is not necessary. The computer cannot decided what is in or out of context for a given reply.

Some forums break these out automatically, so that instead of
[quote DerekP]
Text.
[quote jeremy_c]
Reply.
[quote rywilly]
More text.
[/quote]
[/quote]
[/quote]
It is presented to the user as
[quote DerekP]
Text.
[/quote]
[quote jeremy_c]
Reply.
[/quote]
[quote rywilly]
More text.

Having only the last post quoted is probably easier to implement, though.
I'm not sure that I agree with the context argument. If a viewer wants to see the entire context of a message, that person just needs to hit "view thread" to see everything.
Certainly, though, a poster should have the write to use nested comments. Which is the reason I'm in favor of making this a configurable option.
