Euphoria Ticket #522: RC2 Initial Impression

Observations about EuphoriaRC2

Some quick testing of the new RC.

Windows7 (ow package)

1 ) eui sanity.ex fails

2 ) euc key.ex fails at 4%

Linux Mint9 ( deb package; OS running off a USB install )

3 ) eui sanity.ex fails at:

Euphoria SANITY TEST ... 4%Can't create error message file: ex.err

4 ) sanity.ex has a message is to read INSTALU.DOC, file searching can not find such a file

5 ) deb sets file permissions to "root", the demo programs can not be edited

6 ) euc key.ex ===> produces

mint@mint /usr/share/euphoria/demo $ euc key Build directory: build-811055/ Can't create error message file: ex.err

? file permissions problem ?

7 ) Not clear if .profile has to be edited by the user.

8 ) Finding documentation (without knowing Unix file structure) is hard work. Need a wiki page to get people started after the install.

Wiki Downloading Page

! ) Complements to the "home" page. "Interactive" design could have more uses.

  • ) From a library, could not download pdf (? just a local problem ?)

9 ) Wanted to change: Add note that documentation is already in the Binary packages. To save on redundant downloads.

10 ) Tried to implement 9) . After editing wiki page get:

Request-URI Too Large

The requested URL's length exceeds the capacity limit for this server. Apache/2.2.9 (Debian) mod_ssl/2.2.9 OpenSSL/0.9.8g Server at www.openeuphoria.org Port 80

11 ) Rename installed files from .doc to .txt

  • on Windows7 MS tries to install MS-office
  • on Mint9 OpenOffice wants to load, slowly --> overkill for viewing a small text file

12 ) "Source Releases (Pre-translated)" What does "pre-translated" mean? What is the value of source at this time?

13 ) want a simple .tgz (with binary eui) for a simple install

14 ) For each category (Binary, Source ) need a wiki link called "What to do Next"

for example:

  1. open terminal and test if eui works
  2. how to find demos
  3. how to find documentation

Due to point 10) I did not get very far.

I just bumped up the LimitRequestLine in apache, so you shouldn't see the Request-Uri Too Large issue again (unless your URL is more than 32KB).

If I need to bump it up more, let us know.

Tom, I'm sorry to say this but this ticket is way to large to deal with. Individual tickets should be created. I know that you went through a lot of work with ticket and I'm very grateful, but I'm not certain how to proceed working on any of them. Chances are the sanity and euc problems are already fixed, but I have no way to really mark them off this list.

3. Comment by jimcbrown Dec 09, 2010

I don't agree. ticket:291 was just as big as this, and just as bad, if not worse. But it got done (after a month or so).

4. Comment by DerekParnell Dec 09, 2010

I do agree with Jeremy. When you have more than one independent issue, each one should have its own ticket.

5. Comment by jeremy Dec 09, 2010

1 - 4 and 6 has already been fixed. I will break the others out since so much time was put into this bug report, but in the future please create individual tickets for non-related tasks.

6. Comment by jimcbrown Dec 09, 2010

If we go into RC3, ticket:291 is just going to come back and get even bigger :(

7. Comment by jeremy Dec 09, 2010

See ticket:523 and ticket:524

8. Comment by jeremy Dec 09, 2010

9 & 10 have been fixed.

9. Comment by jeremy Dec 09, 2010

Numbers 7 and ! I am unsure what it means, I did not create a ticket for those two items. # 13 has been completed. I'm not sure that 14 belongs on the Download page. I think the Download page could link to the Manual section What to do Next.

10. Comment by jeremy Dec 09, 2010

I think that's all from this ticket, I'm going to mark it as Fixed, Please Confirm knowing that other tickets have been created from this ticket. Tom, you should browse my notes and see if any additional tickets need to be created and then you can close this ticket as fixed.

Thanks again for the work you put into the ticket.

12) source package means all you need is compiler to build. gcc or for windows, minGW w/gcc or openwatcom 1.8 or greater.

pre translated means no euphoria required to do the translation usually required to build euphoria.

Sorry, this started as an annoyance that I could not add a "help" link on the download page. Now fixed.
