The way functions sorta get bounced around until they are tiny and effective as can be. ;') I think I may have learned quite a bit just watching people working on these little functions (which usually do not matter to me at the time but the TECHNIQUE does). But, yes, I think you are doing a pretty good job. Almost any tutorial should probably start off as simplistic as possible so as to catch everybody. I suppose I'm clamoring for the rules thingies because I am not sure I know how to function with such stuff.
