When I use Netsonic, one of whose functions is to adjust MTU, it preserves the original value in a setting called origmaxmtu. I think that it would not be wise to delete maxmtu, since it is part of a larger set of values. It would be safer to just set it back to 576 until you can get one of the many dynamic mtu setters that will handle it. Actually, I believe that a value of 1500 will work in most circumstances.
