Or xf86config for a text based configuration... I was able to enter
manually my H/V sync rates here.

I think it's /etc/XF86Config or /usr/X11R6/X86Config

Note that virtual console 7 (ALT-7) is the XWindow screen. From XWindow you
can move to a text console by presing CTL-ALT-<number>
