It says there, "fairly trivial for plain ascii" — for a plain ascii console app like Hypatia this would be good enough, if position() works, too. The width of the window could be found out by a loop that writes a row of spaces until cursor column is back to 1. If the width needs to be known in advance to keep track of the cursor, then let's stay with Windows ...
(I just don't understand, how can you write even the most simple user interface when your OS doesn't let you get a grip on the cursor?)
