Comparing literal strings has to be okay, because there can be no confusion about their TYPE, whereas ANY numeric calculation can have either an INT or an ABS as a result. When trying to convert those, weird things WILL HAPPEN, they aren't even 'related'.

No, this should work without issue. There are methods in the C backend to take care of the conversion, so I'm not sure what's going on with switch.

The reason is that both routines use different methods for it, and they start being UNEQUAL in the truncated part.

Actually, make_atom() just calls NewDouble() in some cases.
