For graphics, I'd recommend Paint Shop Pro, it's the best, but it is huge.
Neopaint is much smaller, (I think it fits on a disk), runs in DOS (and is
capable of anything from CGA to SVGA) but has less features. It does have
excellent gradient fills though, IMO.
For 3-D rendering, Pov-Ray is excellent. Extremely powerful, freeware,
ported to several platforms, all sorts of add-ons and shells are available
depending on what you want to do with it.
