Thanks for replying. I was thinking of doing that to view long
filenames when I boot with DOS and don't load win.com. I think a DOS7+
should support long filenames without Windows loaded. EDIT.COM can do
it, not dir. I think it's a way to force people to use Windows more.

"descript.ion" is default and can be changed. There's programs that
don't recognise the change. For Windows95 the long filenames are used
in the descriptions, making these descriptions disappear when long
filenames are disabled, or Windows isn't loaded.

I still use SHEZ, and it doesn't seem to recognise some short filename
descriptions. I'm not sure why, but I'll do some experiments and see
what's going on. These 4DOS/etc 'standard' (and changeable)
description files are more difficult to cope with than I first
thought. I created some Euphoria code primarily to cope with the lack
of long-filename description aware software. If I want something done
and there's no programs to do it, I can try and do it myself.

It would be much easier if 4dos had an option to make the description
the same for short and long filenames, so the descriptions wouldn't
seem to disappear when changing from and to, either short or long
filenames. Maybe Windows98 will have long filenames in plain old DOS
without Windows so this problem will be solved completely!
