1. Database and language related information

Hi, For those who love exotic databases try K. So take a look at http://www.kx.com/. It might give us Euphorians new ideas. The general data structure of the language is lists of lists, sounds familiar isn't it. The language is a compact and complete formula vector language that can implement any algorithm. You can download demo's and manuals. Don't miss the K User Manual. So create your idea and go Euphoria. Another nice site is http://www.cs.kun.nl/~clean/. A language with a complete working WIN-API and free downloads for study. For me this language is to difficult so I keep using Euphoria. I post this message NOT with the intention to pull you away from Euphoria only to broaden your sight. Marcel

I am not impressed, *none* of the support or example files would download, and neither would the program download. I can see why it's so difficult to use. Kat

I even installed it under NT 4.0, and again without any problems. In fact I like it very much so far. It's not as simple as Euphoria, but it appears to be reasonably complete, examples that I tried, worked, and it seems to be quite fast too, though I have not done any benchmarking yet. Overall it's the first functional language that I feel comfortable with. I do not even know whether I will have enough time and energy to explore it any more, but it certainly looks very promising, some aspects, like project management, ide, etc, appear to be streets ahead of our beloved Euphoria. Be fair. jiri

I got errors with every attempt to download when i clicked on download at the web page. I didn't get the window asking if i wanted to run it or save it. It is true, it did NOT download here. > I downloaded the thing twice already, the > bundle for Windoze, without a hitch. I even installed it under NT 4.0, and > again without any problems. Be fair. jiri I am being fair, Jiri. I downloaded Rebol, Perl, Free Pascal, Lisp, Prolog, and several other languages. Why would i tell you a lie about Clean? Kat

Kat, you did not say "I could not download...'', you said "*none* ... would download,...", because you needed it for the cute punch line. That's what I meant by fairness. jiri

Solution: anonymous FTP using the URL for address and path. Initial impression: Doesn't look as CLEAN as Euphoria... but I only compiled a few games. I haven't looked at any docs... -- Brian

Kat, peeved.

(Does anybody remember Everett >any more?) jiri Backhanded "what" did you say Jiri. I'm still alive out here, but very busy at the moment. At least you two are proving that it doesn't require my presence to have a little minor irritability in this group. The only thing wrong with this conversation is that any "positive comment" about any language other than Euphoria seems to draw negative comments on the list. The only reason that this defensiveness seems necessary is that our esteemed author seems determined not provide the types of facilities that most of these other budding languages seem to think necessary. It is a choice. Whether it is a good choice remains to be seen. I vote for an IDE and standard libs at least approved, if not maintained by the author. I would also vote for open source and cooperative development, but that seems to be another "foreign" concept, even with a Linux version at hand. One man bands seem to have died out in the early part of this century because better music could be made by groups cooperating together. In the long run, this language will not survive unless it is carried forward by a wider group and with more openness than now exists. The idea of some ill event happening to Mr. Craig at this moment hardly can be born. In addition, too much time is wasted trying to guess what was "really" intended in some features of the language...since the documentation is anything but definitive. On the other hand, even with the loss of Mr. Dumer, some other contributors have made some major advances in facilities for the language to use. I hope that continues and provides some incentive to our authors to take the future of this language more seriously. Everett L.(Rett) Williams rett at gvtc.com
