Could somebody send me a compiled and ready to use gcc compiler + any stuff it needs ALONG WITH decent documentation? Could someone also send me a compiled and ready to install desktop (ie KDE, GNOME), and that too WITH decent documentation? I'd prefer Windows Maker, because from what I've seen on the net, it appears to be the best smaller one. I've already d/l'd its files, but don't have a clue as to how to install/compile them. I've tried to read its documentation, but I don't get it. If you'd like to help me, the Windows Maker website is http://windowsmaker.org/. Why do all Linux progs I see need to be compiled, is it that open source thing w/Linux? If thats so, just distribute your prog in a source & compiled form, jeez! I'm running LoopLinux, which previously was known as DOSLinux. If anyone cares, it was last updated 2/3/00. I don't remember its website, you could probably figure out via YAHOO!. If somebody does decide to help, I'd suggest posting the compiled stuff on a webserver, mailboxes usually only hold 3 megs. You're probably thinking to yourself, stay with DOS, quit complaining! I see Linux as a real possibility to overthrow Windows and DOS. I want to learn this system and possibly help make it better. One last thing, under LoopLinux/DOSLinux, is it possible to get a new kernel w/o screwing up the current configuration, or does LoopLinux have its own kernel version? If anyone knows a good HOWTO site, please tell me!! Thanks, Mike Hurley

you should be able to get a gcc/g++ binary from the GNU home page http://www.gnu.org. Once you have that the rest should be able to build itself. If not 95% of the win-managers are available in binary from http://www.slackware.org hope this helps, E.Allen Soard E.S.P. Would you like us to come round and install it for you, too? :) I suggest you try mandrake (if you are prepared to repartition). It is available at http://www.mandrake.org Detailed, easy to follow install documentation is available onsite, and mandrake is basically Red Hat + KDE, the best window manager IMHO - no config files, all graphical etc. The install procedure is easy to follow, esp if you have copied it onto a CD - just boot off it. As with red hat, it comes with a programme to resize existing partitions without losing data, but even better is PartitionMagic. If you really want to try linux, you have to install it on it's own partition. Also, a good guide through the whole thing is Sams Teach yourself Linux in 24 Hours. If all of this daunts you, try Caldera Openlinux (comes with the Above mentioned book and many others) - it has a completely graphical - anyone can do it - just follow the prompts install. Gcc comes ready to use on almost every Linux CD, even the $1.99 ones from cheapbytes.com. Erm.. how would we compile a complier before we had a compiler, anyway? Would my program, compiled on a pentium II, run on an Alpha, or a Mac? Don't think so. If I distribute the source, it can be compiled on whatever platform a person is using. Even so, many programs _are_ available in pre-compiled versions for each specific processor family. You won't find these on Linuxberg.com, they're not going to post 5 or 6 copies of each program. Your best bet is to find the homepage for the particular software, and look for links there. 90% of the programs I have downloaded compile and run just fine, with three commands: ./configure make make install The other 10% won't compile, and I don't have the patience to find out why, so I move on. You are right about WindowMaker, it's a nice, lightweight window manager, however, KDE comes ready to use on most distributions, and it is more like Windows, which makes life easier. > You're probably thinking to yourself, stay with DOS, quit complaining! I see > Linux as a real possibility to overthrow Windows and DOS. I want to learn > this system and possibly help make it better. You should learn it. Whether it replaces Windows or not, it will be used more and more in business. Those businesses will need people who know Linux, so it's a good move. And, as we know, Bill is trying hard to bury DOS, even though it isn't dead. .. > If anyone knows a good HOWTO site, please tell me!! http://www.linux.org http://www.linuxdoc.org There are Liinux user's groups everywhere (see the list on linux.org), e.g. http://www.ale.org Many have maillists like this Euphoria list, which are the best places to get answers to your questions. Often hese groups have meetings and install fests, where you can get an expert to install Linux for you. Also, check out the Linux Journal http://www.linuxjournal.com for hints and news. You'll need a book or two to really learn much - so I suggest you look thru your local MicroCenter or whatever for one that you find understandable. SuSE (about $32) comes with an excellent book on settiing up Linux, but it doesn't cover anything at all about programming. -- Irv Sig on order
