Hey guys, I'm going by this on my own, trying to get people to use Euphoria instead of QB and C. Some help, please? This one guy said it has no user base, there are no utilities, and he called you guys crappy. P.S. What's a user base?

Seriously, you might point out that C had no user base when it was invented, either. BASIC _used_ to have a huge user base, until other programming languages were invented, and people found out how limited, unwieldy, and utlimately old-fashioned it was. (You may have to explain these long words to him - they basically mean "crappy") Ask just what utilities he is talking about. (I'm betting he won't be able to name any) If he does, point out that Euphoria is so easy to use we don't need to depend on others to write simple utility programs for us . Regards, Irv

Hello Matt, >Hey guys, I'm going by this on my own, trying to get people to use Euphoria >instead of QB and C. Some help, please? You're not the only one who likes to tell other programmers about this awesome language. But there are always going to be people that: 1. Are afraid of anything new or unknown 2. Think that something like Euphoria is too good to be true 3. Are afraid of being a minority (small user base) or 4. Actually have a good reason for using another language Most "unbelievers" fall in the first 3 categories. #4 people are actually some of the easiest "converts" and I believe you'll find that many Euphoria programers fall into this category. They use Euphoria for projects that are suited to Euphoria and other languages for other projects. I hope some of these individuals will admit it so I won't sound like a total fool for saying this. Heck, I still use VB for simple windows apps because of its easy-design environment. This one guy said it has no = user >base, there are no utilities, and he called you guys crappy. Interesting. Apparently, the guy doesn't have a clue as to what Euphoria = is all about, or what it's like, or how many people are using it. I suppose = if all he's interested in are utilities and a large user base, he'll love COBOL. But let's look at these "arguments" against the language one = at a time shall we? 1) No user base. (I'll assume he meant "low".) Honestly, that's = irrelevant. If everyone neglected a language because it was new and had a low = userbase, ignoring it's benefits, C would have never gotten off the = ground. So not only is rejecting Eu. on that basis alone illogical, history shows that = the rest of the programming community disagrees with his stance. 2) No utilities. I agree with Irv here... what's a utility? The language = has a host of runtime checks. It has a built-in trace feature, and all = crashes tell you EXACTLY what went wrong, and where (in the registered version.) = What more does the man want? If he's talking about parsers, libraries, etc., = you might want to mention the hundreds of solid, user-created contributions. 3) We're "crappy". Hmm... not the language, but us. I think I can safely = say this "response" demands that it be ignored.... There, that wasn't hard. With those points made, you can then show off = the benchmark results where Euphoria blows a few other languages out of the water. Frankly though, this one guy doesn't exactly sound open to new = ideas. It would probably be better to spend time presenting these points to = people who are at least partially receptive. Rod

In response to there being "no utilities", there's one simple argument that sums up Euphoria as a whole: With Euphoria, it's trivial just to write the damned things yourself. Greg
