Why do some posters think that every acronym that they use on the list server is something that everyone is familiar with. It would help if you use an acronym that somewhere in your post you explain what it stands for so that readers do have to look it up or ask some one on the list what's MD5, RPM, RPG or etc.

MD5 is an advanced encryption algorithm used a lot in the Linux world, I believe. Greg "Lucius L. > What is MD5? Warning: this is a rather long post; I thought it would be more interesting to explain it with some more details. Here it goes: MD5 is a "message digest" algorithm, also known as a "one-way hash function". You give it a sequence of bytes of any length, and it computes a 16-byte hash (representation) of it. Because of the method used, it is almost impossible to find another sequence of bytes with the same hash value. Message digest algorithms can be used to store access passwords: for each user, the hash of the password is stored instead of the password itself. When the user enters a password, the hash of the password entered is calculated and compared with the stored one. As it is very difficult to find a message that will give the same hash value, if someone steals the file that stores the passwords, he will not know what they are. There are many other possible uses for message digest algorithms, such as verifying the integrity and authenticity of files and messages. I hope my explanation wasn't too hard to follow ;) Regards, Davi Figueiredo davitf at usa.net ____________________________________________________________________ Get free email and a permanent address at http://www.amexmail.com/?A=3D1

Sorry Bernie, >what's MD5, RPM, RPG or etc. RPG stands for "Role Playing Game" RPM is "Rotations per minute" :) I don't know what MD5 is though later, Lewis Townsend ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com
