1. About a technical list issue

When I receive mail, I open a window to my mailbox. It lists the subject= , the From, and the size. What I'm griping about it the "from" field. I'm wondering if anyone else= has noticed, or is it just me. Two possible things can occur in the from field. The first is the appearance of the list's name Euphoria Programming... If I click reply, = my reply is sent to the list. Second, there could be an individual's name there. Now, the mail went through the list, but his name is overriding. So, when I clicked reply a= nd wrote back, meaning to write back to the list, I write back only to that person. This has happened a few times. Can someone please tell me it is just me or is there a mailer setting tho= se people can adjust so this doesn't happen? If there is, I kindly ask that= you adjust your mailer so that when you send mail to the list, the "From"= field actually reflects that. No, its not the from field. The "from" field in the header (once I open the message) is always the name of the person. Its the "Reply-To" that's= causing me grief. I hate to single people out, but to help people see if= there's problem, these three people have their mailers do what I'm talkin= g about. Terry Constant Monty King Daniel Bernstein Bob may have this also. Thanks for anyone's help and advice. --Alan =

Alan, Concerning your From/Reply concerns. Most likely it simply the difference between mail sent to the list and private mail sent to you. You mention me by name. We recently had an exchange of private e-mail concerning Mo-Slo. I sent you private e-mail because what you and I discussed was not pertinent to the group. The group does not care that one of my clients is having trouble with Clipper on machines over 233 mz. This message is sent to you on the list because that is where you discuss the issue. If you don't want private e-mail responses, please say so. I will not send you unwanted e-mail, and I am sure the others will not either. -- Terry Constant mailto:constant at flash.net http://flash.net/~constant

I clicked on Terry's followup, and it went to Terry (only). This is the same in Netscape, Communicator, Eudora and IE, so I don't think it is a reader setting. To put it another way, I don't think I could have screwed up all four readers identically without knowing it. Besides, I just tried to find settings to change this in Eudora and Communicator, without success. Perhaps Terry, Monty and Daniel would be kind enough to tell us what mailer program they are using? I find it hard to believe that Netscape 3.04 is a problem. I have sent thousands of e-mails using it. This list is the first to ever complain. I am tired of responding to e-mail that claims that Netscape 3.04 is causing a problem. It might be, but I seriously doubt it. Nevertheless, since I seem to be bothering people this is my last piece of mail. I am signing off as soon as I send this mail. Best wishes to all. -- Terry Constant mailto:constant at flash.net http://flash.net/~constant

Whew, Irv. I thought I was the lone ranger on this one. I have a tentative answer to the problem I'm trying to confirm. Is it possible that these people have their reply-to fields filled in, while the rest of us don't? So therefore, the From field takes over and the list fills in the reply-to? IF, and this is an IF, I am correct, perhaps the people affected would be kind enough to erase their reply-to field. Again, I don't know how to do it, and I don't know if this is the= problem, but that's the direction I'm heading in. Regarding their mailers, I believe Monty's is Microsoft Outlook Express 4.72.2106.4 Terry's I believe is Mozilla 3.04Gold (Win95; U) Robert also has this problem. I believe his mailer is Microsoft Outlook Express 4.71.1712.3 I hope I can find out more info on this interesting phenomenon. --Alan =

Uh, oops. I got wrong info. About the mailer info I guessed at. It is most likely incorrect. Sorry. --Alan =
