Who scoffed? All design books I have read say these are good. They ease users
blood pressure.
It takes the average user 1/5th of a second of nothing appearing to happen to
get worried and 8.5 seconds to reboot.

So true. You forgot to mention that during the 8.5 seconds, they somehow
manage to
push all the wrong buttons which delete important files, bring down the
network,
and empty the coke machine down the hall. The response is predictable,
but the
disasters are random.
