1. ATI Rage + Linux = trouble (somewhat related to EU_ENGIN.E

Btw,

The last time I had Linux running on my puter (Red Hat 6.2 w/ Bash + Gnome),
there were some issues with my video card. The only resolutions I could set
in the vgatest program were 320*200*256 and 320*240*256. Probably has
something to do with the crappy mach64 drivers..
So my question is: wich driver is the best one to use with an ATI Rage LT
Pro?

I was trying to use the ATI Rage with RedHat Linux and I could never
get it to install sucessfully so I went to a different video card.
The problem is some kind of compatability problem with the ATI card.

The winmodems aren't real modems, they are the very minimum hardware
it takes to get to the phone line. All the smarts in a real modem are on the
card,, but with a winmodem, they are in the driver for the card. This means
*anything* the modem does, it really doesn't,, it interrupts the cpu to have
it do it. This is one of Billy Gates's wonderful ideas. What still bugs me is
why they don't have the driver in a rom on the card, so it autodetects and
runs fine from bootup. You can't give me a winmodem, and i recommend
against using them. The original reasoning behind them was that the
functions of the winmodem could be upgraded with a single download, for
instance, download a software package, and presto, it is now a
winfaxmodem. Near as i can tell, this procedure hasn't worked as
promised, especially if you dl the wrong one (likely, because of the number
of different winmodems), you are disconnected from the web and cannot
get the proper one.

Can you give me a pointer to where to get that driver?

   Thanks.

It Really depends on what manufacturer made your modem.
Some of the WinModems aren't supported and no drivers exist for Linux
but, If you do a search from the RedHat Web Site for WinModems
you might find one that will work buried in the NET.
Sorry but, I dont know who made you modem or I would tell
you. However, there is a site dedicated to WinModems for Linux out there
I just forgot what the name of the site was.

If it's any thing like my modem situation Linux can be a bear
I have a WIN modem that had to have a special driver designed to
even connect then still it's not as good as it should be.

I like Linux dont get me wrong but, it sure has an awfull long way
to go before anything get's easy. I had a great setup at one point
everything seemed fine then all of the sudden it turned to crap.
I decided to get rid of Linux but, in light of the newest engine
I'm thinking about putting it back on for another go at trouble.
