During beta a method changing from ABC to XYZ should be listed in the release notes not in the main docs. The release notes are for a concise list of what has changed/renamed/removed/fixed/added. People are not going to want to read though the entire manual looking for change notes.
Now, once we've hit final it would be good to keep things such as "Deprecated in 4.0", or "Added in 4.8", etc...

But I should add that was done during a time when the release notes were vastly far behind and largely not up to date.
