Re: even more about ramdrive

To those of you who sound pretty confused about all of this, ramdrive is
one of those DOS Thingies that Windows can't exist without. The reason is
that it is in the Windows directory is that it would be too embarrassing
for Microsoft to place it anywhere else. It is can also be found in the
Emergency BootDisk you are advised to create when you first install your
system, and also on the OEM installation disk. For the adventurous, who
want to see how much 95 and 98 (and even NT) have progressed away from DOS,
try using the original ramdisk.sys from ms-dos 5.xx or 6.xx or as found in
Windows 3.1. They all work. The reason is that Windows CANNOT install
itself without a DOS platform to do it under, as it needs the Extended Ram
to be active before it can do anything at all (i.e., won't work and can't
do under the normal 640k barrier of the INTEL xx86 legacy nightmare. That
is what the INSTALL WINDOWS is: one great big DOS bootstrap operation.

I get great satisfaction out of knowing that, until Windows of all types
gets away from the way that it has to build itself, DOS is still here to
stay. blink
