multimedia keyboard

hello everyone! if you are like me, you love the potential feature of your
multimedia keyboard. although, the keyword here is POTENTIAL. i have found
no use for the "default" media player that comes with my keyboard software.
the "play" control buttons play only AVI and MPG files, whereas i want the
use them to control winamp. i also want to be able to control the little
email notification light on the right of the extra keys, so that it WORKS!
my solution is this: write a program in which any user may customize ALL the
extra keys on ANY multimedia keyboard (i.e. universal control). i have,
however, run into many problems. the first being my lack of knowledge of the
Win9x API. my largest problem being this: how do i read these "extra
keystrokes"? it has boggled my mind, for they cannot be read by any
conventional means, only my "magic" keyboard software can read them. do i
need to access the dlls of my software, or can i read them through some
other means?

ps: i have a Ortek Versato Multimedia keyboard, with really crappy software.
