Thanks to those who drew my attention to the 'dir' function in file.e.
(I wasn't aware that there was such a great function there! It's time I
went through the whole manual from start to end.)

For the record, here's the new and much improved version of that form
feed stripper. Please throw away the old one.

For another record, I put together the same filter in two varieties of
Basic too, and the score now stands:
Borland C++ 4.5          6 sec
Euphoria 1.5            11 sec
Turbo C 2.0             13 sec
PowerBasic 3.2         110 sec
QuickBasic 4.5         344 sec (no, I couldn't make this one faster)
