Searching the Mailing Archives

Everytime I delve into the mail archives, I quickly became frustrated.

I do a search, I get the first 50 results (sorted by relevance?)
How do I get the rest of the results?

I do a search for "pass by reference", and I get results for every post 
that contains EITHER 'pass', 'by', or 'reference'. How do I specify that 
my filters are inclusive, not exclusive?

How do I sort by Author? by Date?

Is it possible to have the MIME stripped from the posts that are in the 
archives?
