this is not actually a bug in Exotica.  It seems to be a bug in DirectX
itself.
Certain games will also exibit this behavor.  For example, Half-life will
do this 3/4 of the time on my system, Darkstone does
it about half the time, and Diablo always does it.  Your mileage may vary,
but the one thing all these games have in common
is DirectX.
