1. GAMES on Euphoria

Hello, all
I've got an Idea. We've got a ton of very good programmers and the like.
why don't we all pull our resources together and create a game, util, or
an app? and release it into the freeware market.

Not only will this rase the awarness of Euphoria to the public.
Plus I know that WE ALL can create a kick 'butt' program...

Questions, comments, and cuss-words welcome! :)

Hello & Great Idea!

Perhaps we could attempt creating a 3D game Engine like doom ( Just to
see if it can be done ). I must confess I'm not much of a programmer
(yet!) but , I think I can pull my weight with some of the artwork ,
animation's etc...

>Not only will this rase the awareness of Euphoria to the public.

I not so sure that's necessary, at least here in vegas Euphoria is
catching on like wild fire.

P.S. Let me know what you think, idea's etc...

Hey, noy a bad idea! I know that most of the people on this list are
experienced Euphoria users. We could come up with some killer
titles........

Great idea! But not really! If want everyone on the mailing-list, you got
over 140 people, which will not work out. If you want just the good ones
(there goes me...), you'll probably find them working on their own projects,
like Micheal Packard and his Wolfenstein97 idea. And even if you do get
people together, you need a leader to back them up (any volunteers?). Great
idea, but it'll be hard getting it to work. (but that's the way we like it)

Agreed. That's the idea behind our course project in Crash Course.
Everyone's gonna have input programming it (eventually =) and I've
already walked you through about 2/3 of the design issues. I'm leading
that project.

Man, why do you always reply with the entire letter? (and you complain about my
signature!). Anyways, we all know you're leading the crash course project,
but I don't see how EVERYONE will contribute (interesting concept, though).
I don't
know much about this because I hate tutorials (argh!) and I never tried yours.

The way it will work (I hope) is when we actually get to the coding of the
project, I'll present the issues we need to deal with and open it up for
the rest of us to figure out. Then when we find the best solution, we'll
incorporate it back into the code in progress.

I'm hurt. Crash Course is like NO tutorial you've ever seen. If you want
to learn game design or production you MUST see it. Right now we're
about 2/3 into Game Design, what it is, what you MUST know BEFORE you
start programming, and how to document it.

BTW I spent an hr last night looking for another (better, smaller) grim

It's unfortunate your negativity towards tutorials prevented you from
viewing Michael's excellent games intro course. I consider myself a very
well-experienced programmer, but my graphic skills are nonexistant. Thank
God for Neopaint ;>. I have gotten some good programming tips from his
page. When he finishes his work on OIdZone and has the printed manual
ready, I plan to purchase the $40 US edition of OidZone to study his
concepts and write my own game engine.

I think we should all be a little more open minded towards applications
that are not be as hot or as slick as games. Tutorials are a much needed
resource these days. I get over 100 downloads every month (straight since
last August) for the "A Beginner's Guide To Euphoria" tutorial. While that
won't put me on the Top 5% of the Web list, it does show there are people
who want to learn programming, but are not as good at it as you are,
Reaper. They need help.

Let me clear a few things up here, now. I have NOTHING agains tutorials! I just
don't like using them. I do NOT consider myself a programming expert, I am not
even good at it (I use Paint Shop Pro). I just have a hard time using tutorials
(but I'll give Packard's a try!). I know they are a valued resource, and its a
good thing they are there. I AM NOT putting down Packard's, yours, or anyone
elses tutorials down.
I want FREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEDOM!!!!! (just like William Wallace)

Don't mind me.

10. Re: GAMES on Euphoria

If I came across as sounding like I am coming down on you, Reaper, please
accept my apologies. That was not my original intention. Part of the
reason for my response was to make sure no negative light was accidentally
being cast on things other than Euphoria as a game machine. I guess I came
across as testy despite my efforts and that was not what I wanted.

The other half of the reason for my reply was observing the current thread
of messages about Euphoria being used to design a killer game. While I
will certainly not hold back praise for Euphoria's graphic prowess...in
fact, I applaud it, I think we have all missed the point of Euphoria
possibly being a powerful tool for business applications...okay, I said
it, I said the hated "B" word, but it is true if you think about it.

When I first saw Euphoria's use of sequences, the first thing that came to
my mind was the word, "spreadsheet"...and why not??? If you have an array
of values that you can alter with a single line of code, you got yourself
a one line algorithm for spreadsheet cell updating. Boom, one change and
you are done.

Euphoria also can be great for creating a beautiful word processing
program that can easily merge text with graphics without having to spend
the mega bucks on WordPerfect.

The fact we can create virtually any form of record structure, or even a
unique type of variable is invaluable in business database applications.
Euphoria has the potential for programmers to design a database that can
literally bend and reshape itself based on customer and in-house user
demands, without needing to create new programs for each view of a
database. Change the sequence and the program will adjust automatically.

Euphoria is quite portable too. It's simple structure allows you to create
tools to be used again and again in other programs. That's a boon in any
MIS shop where you want to reuse code, but do not want to face the
nightmare scenario where the code may fail due to a slight imperfection,
and finding this out on a crucial overnight or month end job run. It's the
software equivalent of plug and play.

So what do you guys think? Have I got a point or have I truly lost my
mind? ;)

(I'm not sure if I should answer that... just kidding!) Man that was a long
letter! I know Euphoria is a great for applications, and we already saw some
interesting ones one the official page. The reason "I" talk about games is
because that's what I enjoy programming, and there are probably others who
would say the same. I'm young, watch too much TV, and have a short attention
span, so if I program I have to be making something cool or I won't finish it.
However, I will not deny Euphoria IS good for the "B" word, and I'm sure the
others here won't either. You made a tutorial in Euphoira to help people to
program in Euphoria, which I think is a cool idea.

Hello all,

31/01/97, David Gay asks:

>So what do you guys think? Have I got a point or have I truly lost my
>mind? ;)

Certainly not, David. I got the same idea for programming data based
applications, when I came to see the possibilities of sequences.
I'm trying it, and it's not that difficult to program almost any kind of
data structure, specially if you are using something like Dave Cuny's
preprocessor. The games are beautifull, thanks to Michael, Jiri, Peter,
Jamie, Jacques and many others. (Very glad Jiri is back!).

I myself am not very interested in game design and production. Some of the
games you wrote are quite addictive, though.
But my greatest addiction is to read your programs and to get out the
things that are usefull in my own programs. That is one of the ways you are
helping me. Making a small application to calculate the angles of a
triangle was as challenging to me as beating a high score.

Building 'Business Applications' is not dull; I consider it great fun to
make something to help myself and my colleages a bit.

So to all 'dull' accountants and other people interested:
Just say no to complicated computer languages and
build your applications in Euphoria!

Keep in touch!

*** Reply to note of 01/31/97 10:33
as one of the guilty parties, i agree that there is an amount of chatter
on this group. i also agree with michael - if we can send personal comments
to /private/ e-mail (or refrain from "witty" rejoinders), it would help a
lot.

every now and then, i get depressed and feel like i'm still working with a
"toy" language. despite the speed touted for Euphoria, it is an still only
an interpreted language. i've coded some of the GUI tools in QBASIC. with
the DEFINT option on, they *scream*. in Euphoria, i'm the one screaming: i
can watch the screen being painted as the controls are being drawn.

with game writing, there is always one bottom line - make it faster! if only
for this reason, i think that code written for games is very helpful, because
it pushes the envelope for Euphoria.

i agree that Euphoria is well suited for business applications, and low-end
machines. but i think realistically, there is not a lot of demand for stuff
written in DOS /other/ than games. from a "business" perspective, i think
that you are forced to move to Windows, or die. that may be one of the reasons
you don't see a lot of "B" code. so i'm glad that we're getting hooks to the
win32 toolkit soon.

i'd like to see more "real" applications; certainly they are as difficult
to code. that's one of the reasons i'm putting together the text-GUI stuff:
so people can easily write applications in Euphoria that are palatable to
the general public.

VERY good point, Cuny. With Win95 and such, applications for DOS are dropping
like the cows on "Twister" (oh, that's a good example). Anyways, Windows is the
main (almost only) format for applications these days, and not ones you run in
the MS-DOS prompt. (hopefully games won't end up like this...)
