I believe there is a registry compare utility on ZDNET that is free or shareware that will allow you to difference the registry from a start point. There are a thousand and one registry settings that either control just windows explorer or influence it's appearance or function. Most are undocumented. For a while, I lost the extensions on my file names even though I have all the proper settings in folder options. Then, as mysteriously as they disappeared, they reappeared. Agh! The only way I have been able to track anything like this is to temporarily set all the normal things that start up off using a free program called StartCop( also available on ZDNET as one of their free utilities). Then, I reboot, take a backup of the registry, and then do my worst to cause whatever trouble that I am seeking. If I succeed, I take another backup of the registry, and compare the two. Sometimes this can be quite revealing. Sometimes it is just frustrating. I tried for a while to use a registry change logger, and that was just overwhelming. Too blankety-blank many things get changed in the registry to even begin to filter out anything that you are really interested in. Most of those changes are not permanent or are limited to areas that you can ignore when looking at a difference report. When you are looking at a log, they are all mixed together and the log is usually maaaaaany pages long. Just a few thoughts for a possible tracking of this frustration.
